Magical drops – Playful and artistic schoolyard

for Keljonkangas Comprehensive School

Location: Keljonkangas, Jyväskylä

Year: 2018

“Magical drops” is a public art competition proposal for Keljonkangas comprehensive school. The concept of the art piece is a stream that flows through the schoolyard, into the school buildings and ends at the edge of the forest on the other side of the school area. The main part of the art piece is located on the entrance square. Giant raindrops made of wet pour rubber are flanked with a meandering brick wall. From the entrance square the art concept continues as colors and shapes on the building facades and inside the building. The endpoint of the series is one single giant raindrop shape; a lush mound of perennials.

The playful and multifunctional drops encourage students to move around. They also create various cozy spaces for students to spend time, rest and recover. The brick wall on the other hand functions as a traffic noise barrier and connects the art piece materially to the architecture. Carefully planned lightning intensifies the art experience.
